There was some later criticism of this radio silence, but the RAF responded with its reasons for insisting on reconnaissance patrols sticking to the policy: ‘This prohibition in normal circumstances is perfectly sound, since in the Channel the object of the fighters is to get their report back to headquarters without the enemy realising that they have been seen. There is then a fair chance of the striking force getting over the target before the enemy’s air umbrella is in operation.’ That was probably true for normal events, but the consequences of the German ships passing unscathed through the Channel were such that this rigid dictate of radio silence should have been broken, especially as such a senior officer had actually made the sighting.
The latest news from Beamish and Boyd, which filtered into all of the command headquarters of the RAF and the Royal Navy, carried more weight than previous reports. A senior RAF officer had identified the warships in the eastern Channel as being the heavy units from Brest. There was now no doubt about it and the codeword ‘Fuller’ was flashed all along the south coast of England: ‘The German ships are out!’
